A self‑built, 2,700‑sf vertical house—industrial clarity meets crafted warmth on the edge of Blacksburg.
300 John Lemley Lane is a self‑built house—now the architect’s home—set just outside Blacksburg, Virginia. At roughly 2,700 sq ft and 44 feet in height, the residence pairs an industrial, pared‑back exterior with carefully wrought interior detail. Conceived as a live‑in prototype, it folds artistic instrumentation and custom mechanical systems into a vertical composition that is equal parts laboratory and dwelling.
Made largely by hand, the house is a study in endurance, precision, and craft.
Nearly every element passes through the builder’s workshop—fabricated, fitted, and refined on site—yielding a tough, elegant palette and a sequence of spaces tuned for light, acoustics, and comfort. The result is an austere‑yet‑gracious home that treats construction as a creative act and living as a daily engagement with architecture.
